I am sorry to know that you are unable to install Photoshop CS4 on Windows 10.

I suggest you to try to install the app in Clean Boot and check if it helps.

This helps eliminate software conflicts that occur when you install a program or an update or when you run a program in Windows. It starts Windows by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs.

You also need to check if those disks given by Adobe are compatible with Windows 10 or not.

I started with build 10122 I think, but have tried the setup on builds up to 10162. So far no other programs have had a problem installing or running under Windows 10 (although I am having difficulties with web browsers under 10162).

I have tried both Windows account and local account, with same results. Doing a clean boot makes no difference either. I also have copied the CS4 files to the desktop and tried the install from there (that's how I installed under Windows 7).

I am reading other insiders talking about using CS4 so it must be compatible with Windows 10. I am wondering if there is something in my computer environment that is needed, such as Java or something that has not been loaded on my machine?

You can install the application using compatibility mode, this will help you install a printer using Windows 7 compatible driver. Refer to these links.

I'm having the same issue. I tried to run setup for the command prompt and doing so resulted in the following error message:

Entering extension workflowError: Can not find valid primary session.

Hoping someone knows what the means and how to fix it..

Ok, I figured it out..

My original media turnouts to be an upgrade version of CS4 that I downloaded from the Adobe store in 2009.

Since my lasts post I re-downloaded CS4 from Adobe (yes it is still available to download - you do not need to log into your account to complete the download).

The fresh download installed flawlessly first it asked for my CS4 serial number, then it asked for my Elements 4 serial number. Luckily I still had that serial number in an email from 2006!

Interestingly, my CS4 upgrade purchase and my Elements 4 purchase no longer appear in my 'Purchased Items' in my Adobe account. Huh, wonder why that is?

Anyway, hope this helps someone.

Although CS4 comes with a variety of default settings, custom settings enable you to utilize your workspace to increase efficiency. Over time, the preferences fiel may become corrupt, which results in printing problems, among other issues. When you recreate your preferences file, PhotoShop deletes the custom settings associated with the file. Recreating the preferences file involves renaming it. Before renaming the file, quit CS4 and turn off your printer. If you open Windows Explorer, locate the Photoshop CS4 Prefs.psp file in the folder found on this path: 'Documents and Settings/[username]/Application Data/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop CS4/Adobe Photoshop CS4 Settings.' If you rename the file to 'Prefs.psp.old' (without quotes), the preference file is automatically created. After renaming this file, open Photoshop and try printing again. If the problem persists, the preference file isn't the issue, so restore the original name of the previous preference file to activate your custom settings.

Drivers and Software

Drivers enable your printer to communicate with the computer. In some cases, corrupt, outdated, damaged or missing drivers are the cause of Photoshop CS4 printing problems. To determine whether the issue is with the printer's driver, try printing using another program. If the new program you're using does not detect the printer, the issue is likely with the printer's driver or software. In fact, corrupt printer drivers are known to display the dreaded 'Before you can perform printer-related tasks such as page setup or printing a document, you need to install a printer' that appears on the screen when CS4 cannot detect your printer. Refer to your printer's documentation for information on installing drivers and software. You should also check the 'Support' or 'Downloads' section on your printer manufacturer's website for updated drivers and software. If the printer's drivers are damaged or corrupt, you need to remove them before installing an updated copy.

Printer Compatibility

If Photoshop CS4 is still not capable of detecting the printer, the issue may be with the printer itself. The printer may not be compatible with the version of Windows you're using. Printers come in a variety of shapes, sizes and features. They also include specifications a computer must meet to print. Before installing a printer, always refer to its specifications for compatibility information.
