  • If a Picture Style has already been registered under [User Def. *], changing the base Picture Style in step 6 will nullify the parameter settings of the registered Picture Style. If you execute [Clear all camera settings], all the [User Def. *] settings will revert to their defaults.
  • I think the Mk2 does have a slightly different file format for the Custom Picture Styles. I have textual descriptions of the parameters for the picture styles, just dial them in manually in the camera. Look for the desired picture styles on my Webpage, if the parameters are missing, just note me and I will add them.

I'm a newbie and wanted to know more about the 'Picture Style' menu area.
I'm shooting an XSi. How does one go about creating a custom style?

Together with your camera you should have received software called Picture Style Editor. Briefly, you open an image with it (any image, it's just so you can see the effect of the editing you will do), apply one of the regular Pictures Styles to it as a starting point, and then modify it and save the changes as a new P.S. Or you can follow the lazy man's method and download a selection of Picture Styles (other than those that came preloaded in the camera) from HERE.
These P.S.'s can be applied to a RAW file with DPP or uploaded to your camera for jpgs with (I think) EOS Utility.
